HOF Class of 1998
When Michigan-born quarterback Tony Dungy finished his University of Minnesota career, he’d carved out places in the Gopher record book: all-time leader in pass attempts (586), completions (274), passing yards (3,515) and touchdown passes (25).
The two-time team MVP was also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Dungy signed with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played safety for two seasons. In 1978, he intercepted six passes, second-best in the AFC, and helped the Steelers defeat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XIII.
In 1980 he returned to Minnesota to become the Vikings’ defensive backs coach. Then, on to Pittsburgh, where he was first an assistant and then the league’s youngest defensive coordinator at age 28. He was an assistant or coordinator with Kansas City and Minnesota, and then became head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leading them to the 1999 NFC championship game.
As head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Dungy led his team to its first Super Bowl title, in 2007.
