Men’s Swimming & Diving, 1922-25
HOF Class of 1995

John Faricy, a three-time All-American swimmer for the Gophers in the seasons 1922, 1923 and 1925, was unbeaten in three years of competition in the 200-yard breaststroke.

He held the Big Ten and NCAA records in that event, set the world record in the 100-yard breaststroke, and was a member of the 1924 U.S. Olympic team. The legendary Niels Thorpe, Gopher coach from 1920 through 1957, called Faricy the greatest swimmer he ever coached.

After graduation from the U of M, Faricy earned his masters degree in social work from Pittsburgh, and became coach of the University of Havana team in Cuba. He took his Cuban team to the Central American Games in Mexico City in 1926.

Faricy was inducted into the U of M Aquatics Hall of Fame in 1985, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1990.
