One of Minnesota’s greatest-ever golfers, John Harris came to the University on a hockey scholarship. Indeed, he was legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks’ first captain and was the second-leading scorer on the 1974 national championship team.

The same year, though, Harris earned All-Big Ten and All-America honors as a member of the golf squad, winning the Big Ten title after finishing second and third the two previous seasons.

After graduating, the Roseau, MN native won the Minnesota State Amateur title, and briefly played minor league before pursuing a golf career in 1976.

That career saw him become one of the state’s most decorated golfers on the national scene, playing in four Walker Cups and winning the 1993 U.S. Amateur title. He has played on several pro tours, including the PGA Champions Tour, where he won the Commerce Bank Championship in East Meadow, NY, in June 2006. A member of the famed Augusta National, he is also a member of the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.
