Distinguished Service Award
HOF Class of 1998
Jim Marshall, a pioneer of athletic training, came to Minnesota Football in 1961 as a trainer assistant to Lloyd “Snapper” Stein.
Before joining the Gophers, Marshall earned a degree in physical education at Notre Dame in 1959, despite having his studies interrupted by four years of service on U.S. Navy submarines during the Korean Conflict. He later received certification in physical therapy from the Mayo Clinic. While at Minnesota, Marshall also worked with the Gopher hockey team.
When Stein retired, Marshall was promoted to head trainer, and he spent the next quarter-century working with the football program, later becoming its administrative services coordinator.
Marshall was a charter member of the Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 1993, and a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He served as an athletic trainer at numerous Minnesota State High School League tournaments and for various high school teams in the Twin Cities area during his U of M career.
