Lloyd 'Snapper' Stein

Lloyd “Snapper” Stein grew up in Two Harbors, MN, and played center for the Gopher football team from 1928 to 1930.
Graduating in 1932 with a degree in physical education, he was the school’s freshman athletic trainer through 1934, and in 1935 became Minnesota’s head athletic trainer.
In 1942, Stein enlisted in the Navy and served as athletic trainer at the Iowa Preflight Center in Iowa City.
Returning to the U of M in 1945, Stein also earned a degree in physical therapy, and served as a research consultant at a local sports medicine clinic. He became known as Minnesota’s “Grandfather of Athletic Training.”
He retired from the University in 1975 but continued to volunteer with the football program. He was a charter member of the Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame, and was the first recipient of the Minnesota Viking ring for his contributions to athletics to the state of Minnesota.
