Kevin McHale
Men’s Basketball, 1977-80
HOF Class of 1995
Widely considered Minnesota basketball’s best ever, Kevin McHale in 1980 earned first team All-Big Ten honors as a forward and led the Golden Gophers to the NIT finals.
MVP of the 1979 and 1980 seasons, McHale set the career shot-blocking record with 235. He was second all-time in rebounds with 950, and fifth all-time in career points with 1,704. Across his Gopher years, the Hibbing-born McHale averaged 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
McHale was selected in the first round, third overall, by the Boston Celtics in the 1980 NBA draft. He played his entire 13-season pro career with the Celtics, and with them won NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. He averaged nearly 18 points per game and appeared in seven All-Star games. He later became vice president of basketball operations for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Gophers retired his No. 44 jersey in 1994.
