Shelly Medernach
Softball, 1976-79
HOF Class of 1995
Shelly Medernach’s sizzling .393 career batting average still held second place in the Gopher record book almost three decades after she achieved it. Her single-season 1976 record of .540 still held first.
In all, the speedy centerfielder set 12 school records at Minnesota, including firsts in career runs, triples and RBI. She played a major role in the team’s appearance at the 1978 AIAW College World Series, where the Gophers finished third.
After her U of M career, Medernach was invited to the 1979 Pan American game tryouts, and later played for several Twin Cities-area fastpitch teams. She became a charter member of the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 1986.
