One of the University’s first all-around athletic stars, Arnie Oss earned nine varsity letters, three each in football, basketball and track in the years 1919, 1920 and 1921.
He earned All-American basketball honors in 1919 and 1921. In 1919 he helped lead the Gophers to an undefeated record; they were declared Big Ten and Helms Foundation national champions.
Oss was an All-Conference football player the same three years, and he starred on the track as well.
He won the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for athletic and academic achievements.
After graduating, Oss was an assistant coach in both football and basketball. He was named “Athlete of the First 50 Years” for both Minnesota and North Dakota. He received the alumni award in 1961 for meritorious service to the University, and was elected to the Helms Basketball Hall of Fame.
