HOF Class of 2005
In his first three games as a senior, football player Lorin Solon scored 51 points, and the team captain seemed on his way to becoming the U of M’s first three-time All- American. He also played for the University of Minnesota baseball team.
Solon’s college athletic career ended, though, when the University learned he had played semi-pro baseball in Havre, MT during the summer.
During his sophomore season, Solon had kicked, punted, played at end and, occasionally, in the backfield as a quarterback and running back. He was named to many All-Big Nine Conference Teams and All-Western Elevens. An Associated Press first team All-American, he was also selected by Walter Camp for his All-America third team.
In 1914, Coach Doc Williams switched Solon to fullback, and still had him play end, placekick and punt. Seven organizations placed him on their All-Big Nine Conference Teams or All-Western Elevens, six at fullback and one at end. Solon remains one of the few players to be named an All-American at two different positions.
When Solon left the Gophers, University President Vincent held a farewell dinner in his honor. Solon later played professional baseball and football. He served in both world wars, rising to the rank of Colonel.
