Robb Stauber, a hockey star at Duluth Denfield High School, came to the University of Minnesota in 1986 and was soon setting records here.
In 1988, Stauber became the first goaltender to receive the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, as the nation’s best college hockey player. He was also a first-team All-American and WCHA Player of the Year that season.
The Gophers had a 102-34-4 record while Stauber was on the team, with back-to-back WCHA championships in 1988 and 1989, and three straight NCAA Frozen Four appearances, including the 1989 finals overtime loss to Harvard at the St. Paul Civic Center.
Stauber set the Gopher single-season record in 1987-88 for games played, 44; for minutes played, 2,621; saves, 1,711; and shutouts, 5. He also held the school record for save percentage, .906; and placed second in games played, minutes played and wins.
Stauber turned pro with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings in 1989, launching a 10-year professional career. In 1993 Stauber, Wayne Gretzky and the rest of Kings played to the Stanley Cup finals. Stauber later played with the Buffalo Sabres, finishing his NHL career with a 3.80 goals against average. He also scored 12 points in his pro career, one goal and 11 assists.
