Harold Van Every
Football, 1937-39
HOF Class of 1994
In 1937, Harold Van Every led the Golden Gophers in passing, running, kick-off and punt returns, interceptions, and punt average. In 1939 he led the nation in season interceptions with eight, a Minnesota school record that still stood 70 years later. He also won the 1939 Big Ten Scholastic Award.
As a junior in 1938, Van Every was injured in the season opener, but came back strong for his senior season, at the end of which he was the first-round NFL draft pick of the Green Bay Packers.
For those efforts and accomplishments, the two-way player later earned Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-America honors.
Van Every played two seasons for Green Bay before he was drafted into the Army, assigned to its Air Corps, and became a bomber pilot. Shot down over Germany, he was captured and imprisoned in a POW camp. After the war, health issues prevented him from returning to football.
