Doug Woog grew up playing hockey in St. Paul, and built a splendid career at the University of Minnesota.

An All-American his junior Gopher season, he led the team in scoring. Team captain as a senior, he guided his team to a second-place WCHA finish. From 1964 through 1966 the center scored 48 goals and 53 assists, 101 points.

Woog played for the 1967 U.S. National Team, was a candidate to join the U.S. Olympic Team and taught and coached, including at his alma mater, South St. Paul High School, where he was head soccer coach and assistant hockey and baseball coach.

From 1971 through 1977, Woog coached the St. Paul Vulcans and the Minnesota Junior Stars, the latter to two U.S. Junior National titles. He was USA Hockey coach, and became Minnesota head coach in 1985.

Woog guided the Gophers to four regular-season and three post-season league championships in 14 years, during which his team earned spots in the WCHA Final Four/Five and/or the NCAA tourney 12 times, including six NCAA Final Four showings.

In 1999, Woog become a Minnesota assistant athletic director, also working as a television analyst for Gopher hockey teams. He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
