Cathie Twomey, of Golden Valley, Minn., was the first All-American in Minnesota women's cross country history, finishing 12th at the 1976 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Championship. She followed with a sixth-place finish in 1977.
A two-time state Amateur Athletic Union state champion (1974-75) and a two-time Minnesota AIAW champion (1976-77), Twomey won the first unofficial Big Ten individual title in 1976.
Lake Elmo, Minn., native Jody Eder has the distinction of being the first runner in the program's history to earn all-region and honors four consecutive years.
A six-time All-American in cross country and track, Eder was also named the team's most valuable runner three times, another unprecedented feat.
Eder's time of 16:32.6 at the 1984 regional still stands as the school record for a 5,000-meter course. She ran 14 of the 50 fastest times in school history at that distance and owns six of the Gophers' nine sub-17 minute times on a 5K course.
Rasa Michniovaite, a native of Pabrade, Lithuania, made her mark on Minnesota cross country in just two seasons after transferring from the University of Vilnius in her home country.
During her first season, Michniovaite became the first Gopher to win the Roy Griak Invitational and an NCAA Midwest Region crown, before placing 16th to earn All-America honors at the 1998 NCAA Championships.
Despite struggling in her senior season with an iron deficiency, Michniovaite again went on to earn All-Big Ten and All-Midwest Region honors.
In 2005, Ladia Albertson-Junkans and Emily Brown became the first Gophers to earn All-America honors in the same season. Albertson-Junkans, a sophomore from Stillwater, Minn., smashed the school 6K record by placing 21st in a time of 20:19.3 at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Brown, a junior from West Allis, Wis., captured her first All-America citation with a 29th-place showing in a time of 20:26.5, a time also below the previous school record. Both also earned All-Midwest Region and All-Big Ten First Team honors during the season.
Albertson-Junkans and Brown repeated as All-American in 2006, becoming the first two-time national honorees in over 20 years. Albertson-Junkans placed 19th in a time of 21:12.9, while Brown matched her 2006 finish of 29th in 21:17.6. The duo added all-region and All-Big Ten honors during the season.Brown posted a third-place showing in the Big Ten Championships.
Jamie Cheever, a Minneapolis native, became the sixth All-American in Gopher history in 2007. As a sophomore, Cheever placed 33rd at the NCAA Championships in a time of 20:58.3. She captured NCAA All-Midwest Region accord with an eighth-place finish.
Megan Duwell, from West Bend, Wis., became the third two-time All-American, capturing honors in 2008 and 2009. Duwell placed 32nd at the NCAA Championships (20:36.5) in 2008, then posted Minnesota's highest individual finish, seventh (20:06.9) in 2009. She added top four finishes in the NCAA Midwest Region and Big Ten Championships her junior and senior seasons.
Stephanie Price captured her first career All-America honor in 2010 with a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Price covered the 6-kilometer LaVern Gibson Championships course in a time of 20:46.7.
Bethany Hasz became the first Gopher in program history to earn First Team All-America honors in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field in the same season in 2020-21. Racing at the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Championships just 72 hours after finishing as NCAA runner-up in the 5,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Hasz placed eighth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to lead the Gophers to a fifth-place team finish, the best finish in program history. She recorded a time of 20:25.2 for the six-kilometer course at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course. Hasz's eighth-place individual finish is the second-highest NCAA showing by a Gopher behind only Megan Duwell's seventh-place finish in 2009.
