University of Minnesota Athletics
Athletic Medicine Internships
![]() |
If you are a current Entry-level Masters/Athletic Training Education Program student or director from an outside institution that is looking for a semester placement, please contact Ronni Beatty-Kollasch at beat0039@umn.edu.
Each sports' Athletic Trainer(s) decide if they are willing and/or able to host a ELM student. We suggest you reach out to that athletic trainer and inquire if they are able to host a student for any given semester/term. Immersion experiences are competitive and it is highly suggested that interested students reach out as soon as possible if they are interested in the University of Minnesota.
Athletic Medicine Intern positions are for current University of Minnesota undergraduate students that are interested in Athletic Medicine/Allied Health Care professions.
Internship Application
Athletic Medicine Student Interns work with University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Trainers in 8 athletic training facilities on campus.
The University of Minnesota Athletic Medicine Program does not offer the education program required for students to become Athletic Trainers (ATCs). However, this program provides practical experience in collegiate Athletic Medicine and associated allied health care professions to students wishing to pursue careers in these fields. For more information on how to become an Athletic Trainer, please visit www.nata.org and www.bocatc.org. Professional aspirations of student interns in this program include physical therapy, medicine, massage therapy, chiropractic medicine, sports psychology, and exercise physiology.
Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education and training and the states' statutes, rules, and regulations. As part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
AM Student Interns are asked to commit an average of 10-15 hours/week (can vary and/or increase depending on specific facility/sport assignment and time of year) during the academic school year. We do not have student interns work with teams during the months of June and July. Preferred candidates can commit 2 or more years to the program and have availability several days a week including evenings and weekends. AM Student Interns are compensated each semester via a stipend that is deposited in to their student account (please note: this is added to your student account via a scholarship and may affect other financial aid you receive and/or qualify for). Specific hours vary depending on teams' practice schedules, competition seasons, and practice schedules throughout the year. Teams may practice/compete in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. There are additional opportunities to work events such as conference championships, large meets/competitions with several teams, and NCAA championships. If you are interested in working with Football, you may need to be available starting August 1 as this is when FB reports for the fall.
Students interested in this program may contact Katie Chen at the email below for further information. When submitting an application, include a copy of your current class schedule and upcoming semester class schedule (if available). Applications can be turned in at any time and will be reviewed prior to the interview process. Please email with any questions regarding the program and/or the application process.
