Few names resonate as loudly with Gopher fans than that of Rickey Foggie.
The legendary Foggie, who started at quarterback for the Gophers for four years, was honored on the field last Saturday during the first quarter of Minnesota's 44-7 win against New Hampshire. Foggie came to Minnesota to play for Lou Holtz and helped turn around a Gopher program that was 1-10 in the year before he got to campus.
As a true freshman, Foggie guided the Gophers to a 4-7 record and ended the season with a 23-17 upset win against rival Iowa as Minnesota reclaimed Floyd of Rosedale. As a sophomore, the dual-threat Foggie paced Minnesota to a 6-5 record in the 1985 regular season and helped the Gophers secure an invite to the Independence Bowl. It was Minnesota's first bowl game since 1977 and the Gophers ended the season with a 20-13 bowl win against Clemson to win seven games.
In 1986, Foggie and Minnesota finished the season with a 6-5 record and competed in the Liberty Bowl. Minnesota lost that bowl game to Tennessee, but the highlight of the season was a 20-17 upset win at No. 2 Michigan.
By toppling the Rose Bowl-bound Wolverines, the Gophers earned the Little Brown Jug for the first time in nine years.
Foggie's Minnesota career ended with a 6-5 record during his senior season. He ended his career as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Gopher history. His 2,150 career rushing yards are the standard for a Minnesota quarterback, and his 5,162 career passing yards rank sixth all-time in school history.
