Matt Limegrover

Matt Limegrover joined the University of Minnesota as an Assistant Offensive Line Coach in January 2026. Limegrover previously worked at Minnesota from 2011-2015 as the Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. He has more than 30 years of coaching experience and has worked almost exclusively with the offensive line.
He has coached in 13 bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl. He has also been on three staffs that have won a Big Ten Championship, as he was at Penn State in 2016 and Northwestern in 1996 and 1996.
Since his time at Minnesota, Limegrover has worked at Kent State, Arkansas State, Michigan and Penn State. Prior to his first stint at Minnesota, Limegrover worked at Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Emporia State, Ferris State Northwestern and Chicago, which is his alma mater.
Most recently, Limegrover was at Kent State from 2023-24. There he served as the Co-Offensive Coordinator, Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach.
He was at Arkansas State in 2021-22. He led the offensive line in 2021 and coached tight ends in 2022.
During his time in Jonesboro, Limegrover coached Andre Harris Jr to All-Sun Belt honors. The Red Wolves’ offense was 11th in the nation in passing at more than 300 yards per game and posted more than 500 yards on four different occasions.
Prior to Arkansas State, Limegrover was the offensive line coach at Penn State from 2016-19. During that span, Penn State won the 2016 Big 10 title, won 42 games and posted wins in the 2019 Cotton Bowl and 2017 Fiesta Bowl. He also served as the run-game coordinator for the 2018 season and helped the Nittany Lions’ set numerous offensive records during the 2016 season including points scored, passing offense and total offense.
In his first stint at Minnesota, Limegrover spent five seasons as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. He held the title of assistant head coach during his final two seasons. The Gophers made three consecutive bowl games in his final three seasons and won eight games in 2013 and 2014.
Before Minnesota, Limegrover was at Northern Illinois from 2008-10 and Southern Illinois 2001-07. He coached the offensive line and called plays at both stops.
While at Northern Illinois, Limegrover produced seven All-Mid-American Conference offensive lineman, including two first team selections in 2010. He helped the Huskies to three consecutive bowl berths and the 2010 MAC West title. The Husky line gave up only 15 sacks in 2009 and led the MAC and ranked 19th nationally in rushing with 202.4 yards per game.
From 1999-2000, Limegrover coached the offensive line at Emporia State. He also made coaching stops at Ferris State (1997-98) and Northwestern (1995-96) as a graduate assistant. He got his coaching start at his alma mater, the University of Chicago (1991-94) serving in a variety of roles, which included Interim Head Coach in 1994.
As a student-athlete, Limegrover was an honorable mention all-conference player as a senior and played on the Chicago offensive line from 1987-1990. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Chicago and a master’s from Northwestern.
Limegrover and his wife, Ann, have two adult children, daughter, Emma, and a son, TJ.
