One of the best pole vaulters in University of Minnesota history returned to the program when Zach Siegmeier joined the Gophers track & field and cross country staff in August 2016. He served as the director of operations for men’s track & field and cross country for two seasons before his role was elevated to track & field assistant coach entering the 2018-19 season.
The 2020-21 track & field season marked Siegmeier’s third season as an assistant coach for the Maroon & Gold. Siegmeier serves as coordinator for both men's and women's pole vault and men's and women's high jump along with working with the multi-events and assisting Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Matt Bingle in all coaching areas. He remains the point of contact for all men's athletes from an operations standpoint.
In the 2020-21 season, Siegmeier coached Allison Gerads (pentathlon) and Teddy Frid (decathlon) to All-America honors, and he coached three pole vaulters to NCAA West Prelim berths in Lexy Berger, Mike Herauf, and Ekhardt Van der Watt. Indoors, Gerads scored 16 points at the B1G Championships, winning the B1G pentathlon title and placing third in long jump. Van der Watt (pole vault), Berger (pole vault), Hannah Arason (pentathlon/heptathlon), and Hannah Morris (long jump) scored points at both the indoor and outdoor B1G Championships under Siegmeier's direction as well.
During the abbreviated 2019-20 season, which ended on March 12, 2020 when the Big Ten and NCAA announced they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns, Siegmeier coached Michael Burke to an NCAA berth. He earned All-America accolades and finished as Big Ten Conference runner-up in men’s high jump. Kiefer set an indoor pole vault PR of 4.05 meters (13-03.50) to move into eighth among all-time Gopher women and Ben Ose debuted on the Gophers’ all-time top-10 list in 10th in men’s pole vault. In 2019, Siegmeier coached three Gophers to NCAA West Prelim berths in Kiefer (women’s pole vault), Karlie Place (women’s pole vault), and Ashley Ramacher (women’s high jump).
A native of Lakewood, Ill., Siegmeier was a two-time All-American for the Gophers and a three-time Big Ten champion. As a senior captain in 2014, he swept the indoor and outdoor Big Ten pole vault titles including a second-straight conference crown during the outdoor season. Siegmeier, who went on to earn Minnesota’s inaugural Garry Bjorklund Award as team MVP in 2014, picked up Second Team All-America honors during the indoor season and First Team All-America honors during the outdoor campaign. He finished his collegiate career ranked fourth all-time at Minnesota in the outdoor pole vault (5.51 meters, 18-01.00 ft.) and fifth all-time in the indoor pole vault (5.45 meters, 17-10.50 ft.).
A three-time letter winner, Siegmeier was also a three-time All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on Sport Science.
Following his college career, Siegmeier competed professionally and cleared a personal record of 5.60 meters (18-04 ft.) to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
