administrators,MADISON, Wis.--The Western Collegiate Hockey Association took another big step forward towards the formation of a new midwestern women's collegiate hockey league Sunday when conference administrators, meeting at the NCAA convention in San Antonio, Tex., passed a motion that entertains and supports the concepts of a women's league with the intention of beginning play in the fall of 1999, pending approval of articles of agreement and operations.

"This is an exciting development both for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the growth of intercollegiate women's ice hockey," said Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod. "Our goal will be to formalize acceptance of articles of agreement at our annual meeting this spring."

A new women's league would likely be adminstered under the auspicies of the WCHA. A committee, chaired by St. Cloud State University athletic director Morris Kurtz, will continue to develop the administrative program to support the operation of the league.

Seven schools are included in the initial plans for the new women's conference. They are: Bemidji State University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; University of Minnesota; University of Minnesota-Duluth; Ohio State University; St. Cloud State University; and University of Wisconsin.
