The Take Down Club was established in 1988 and has continued to grow every year since then. The booster club raises money every year by holding the annual Verne Gagne Minnesota Wrestling and Golf Classic each June. Take Down Club president Brian Bischof says the money is used to provide transportation to the National Duals meet every year and to gather together wrestling fans all over the state to attend pre-match and post-match victory socials.
Last season, the Take Down Club stormed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena and cheered on the Golden Gophers to their first ever National Duals title and the team1s first win in the 16-year old home of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Take Down Club also rallied a group of members together to travel to Penn State for the Big Ten Championships, where the Golden Gophers finished third and Tim Hartung claimed his second Big Ten title at 190 pounds.
The Take Down Club didn1t miss a beat at the NCAA Championships at Akron University in Cleveland, Ohio, where Minnesota finished second in the nation, the highest team finish in school history and Hartung captured the NCAA title at 190 pounds, the first individual title won since Assistant Coach Marty Morgan captured the title in 1991.
It doesn1t matter where or when the Golden Gopher wrestling team is competing, the Take Down Club will be sure to be there in full force cheering their favorite team to victory.
