GOPHERS SWEEP 200 BUTTERFLY EVENT AT TRIPLE DUAL MEET

tA trio of Golden Gophers swept the top three places in the 200-yard butterfly to highlight the No. 14 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team's first day of competition at a Big Ten triple dual meet with Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin in Indianapolis on Friday.

Gopher junior Jenny Hennen placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 2 minutes, 1.05 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of the field. Andrea Simakova finished second in 2:03.14, while Terri Jashinsky completed the sweep placing third in 2:03.94.

Other top finishers for the Gophers were T.D. Rowe first on the 1-meter springboard (491.80), and the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:45.01) and the 800 freestyle relay (7:28.17). Adding second-place finishes were Jinny Smedstad in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:07.45), Beth Shimanski in the 100 backstroke (57.47), Kate McMillan in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.65), Amy Cottrill in the 50-yard freestyle (23.97) and Ann Cahoy in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.85).

The triple dual meet resumes on Saturday at 11 a.m.
