GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS CAPTURE SIX TITLES AT GREAT PLAINS OPEN

PortThe University of Minnesota No. 2 ranked wrestling team crowned six champions at the Great Plains Open in Lincoln, Neb.

Freshman Leroy Vega of Portage, Ind., won the title at 125 with a 3-2 decision over Bo Maynes of Oregon. Senior Pat Connors, ranked 13th nationally, won the title at 133 with a pin over Ryan Schoettle in 1:50. Senior Troy Marr of Wyoming, Minn., defeated Joe Renfro 11-7 to claim the 149 title. Senior Josh Holiday, ranked fourth nationally, won the title at 165 with a 9-7 decision over Todd Buckland. Junior Brandon Eggum, ranked No. 1 in the nation, won the title at 184 with a 3-2 decision over Brad Vering. Senior Tim Hartung, also ranked No. 1 in the country at 197, decisioned Orville Palmer 6-2 to win the 197 title.

Senior Bart Golyer of Cedar, Minn., finished third at 133, freshman Chad Erikson also placed third at 141. Junior transfer Brock Lesnar of Webster, S.D., placed second in heavyweight.

The Golden Gophers also crowned four champions at the 3Flash Flanagan Open in Dubuque, Iowa. Sophomore Brett Lawrence of Sandpoint, Idaho, won the title at 133 with a 20-5 major decision over JC Gaunt of Northern Illinois. At 149, co-champions were named in freshmen Luke Becker and Mitch Marr. Freshman Jacob Clark won the title at 165 with a 7-3 decision over Steve Lueck.

Freshman Benjamin Bly finished third at 184 and freshman Garrett Lowney placed second in heavyweight due to an injury default.
