GOPHER SOCCER DEFEATS ILLINOIS STATE IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCH

oThe University of Minnesota soccer team defeated Illinois State, 3-0, on Sunday, handing the Redbirds their first loss on the season. Illinois State fell to 12-1-1, while Minnesota improved to 8-6-0 overall.

Senior midfielder Amy Koehler scored her first goal of the season to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead at the 26:06 mark. Assists were credited to Laurie Seidl and Samantha Meyers.

The Gophers went up 2-0 when Nicole Lee broke away down the left side of the field and booted an unassisted goal at the 40:28 point of the first half. Lee owns a team-high six goals on the season.

Minnesota tallied its third goal at 80:57 when Jaime O'Gara gathered a pass from Megan Johnson and sailed it past a charging Redbird keeper. Erika Kruse was credited with the second assist.

Gopher goalkeeper Dana Larson needed just three saves to collect the shutout victory. She has 4.5 shutouts in goal this season.

In action around the Big Ten on Sunday, Penn State captured at least a share of the conference title with a 3-0 victory over Michigan State, coupled with a 3-1 Michigan loss at Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions could win the title outright with a victory Friday at Ohio State.
