oKatherine Cahill scored on a shot through traffic in the second period and Providence goalie Sara DeCosta made it stand up with a 22-save shutout as the Friars defeated Minnesota 1-0 to earn a split of the teams' two-game series at Schneider Arena.

The game's lone goal came during the second period, which saw Providence dominate the Gophers, outshooting the visitors 13-2.

Cahill got the puck at the right point following a faceoff win by Jenn Butsch. He shot deflected off a skate in front and past Minnesota goalie Erica Killewald, giving the Friars all they would need to earn their first win in six tries against the Gophers.

Despite pressure by the Minnesota late in the game, DeCosta thwarted every effort, stopping nine shots in the final 20 minutes while finishing with 22 saves for the game. Killewald had 27 stops for the Gophers.

The Gophers return to action Friday in the first of a two-game series in Boston, Mass., as they take on Northeastern at 7 p.m. EDT.
