The University of Minnesota soccer team was drilled by Penn State, 4-0, in Big Ten action in State College, Pa., Sunday. The Golden Gophers' record falls to 5-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play.

No. 5 Penn State (8-2-1, 4-0-1 Big Ten) needed only nine shots to collect its four goals and hand the Gophers their worst shutout loss since a pair of 5-0 defeats in 1993. Minnesota took eight shots in the match, led by three from Nicole Lee.

The Lady Lions struck early and often. All-American Kelly Convey tagged the Gophers for three goals, scoring her first just 2 minutes, 10 seconds in the match. Christie Welsh, last year's high school national player of the year, added Penn State's second goal on a breakaway 44 seconds later at the 2:54 mark. Convey gave Penn State a 3-0 halftime lead with her second goal at 21:30, then completed the hat trick with a goal at 64:33.

The Gophers return home to begin a five-match homestand, hosting Indiana on Friday, Oct. 8.
