The game was a battle of defenses until the fourth quarter when the two teams combined scored 35 points. The Golden Gophers were behind 33-21 in the fourth quarter when Billy Cockerham connected with Ron Johnson on a 12-yard pass play on fourth down to come within five points.

Minnesota attempted the onside kick, but Purdue recovered it and held on to the ball to win the game.

Purdue quarterback Drew Brees finished the day with 283 yards on 28-of-41 pass completions and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 47 yards on 10 carries.

Senior running back Thomas Hamner had another outstanding effort with 166 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. It was his fifth consecutive 100- yard rushing game this season, all coming against Big Ten opponents. Hamner also had a career-long 60 yard touchodwn run in the fourth quarter.

Cockerham competed 13-of-24 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. Johnson caught four passes for 64 yards and Leverson had four catches for 56 yards.

Purdue receiver Chris Daniels caught 13 balls for 101 yards.

Defensively Tyrone Carter collected 14 tackles , eight of which were unassisted.

Minnesota will travel to University Park, Pa., next weekend to face the No. 2-ranked Nittany Lions. Game time is 11:10 a.m. Central and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
