GOPHER WOMEN HARRIERS 17TH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Brigham Young, ranked third entering the championships, scored 72 points to win its second title in three years. The Cougars point total was the lowest since Villanova scored 66 points to win the 1993 title. The Gophers scored 434 points.
Individually, Wisconsin's Erica Palmer, the 1999 Big Ten Conference runner of the year, won with a time of 16 minutes, 39.50 seconds.
Minnesota was led by senior Rasa Machniovaite. A 1998 All-American, she placed 66th overall in 17:48.10. Juniors Corinne Nimtz and Elaine Eggleston posted top-100 finishes. Nimtz was 79th in 17:51.30 and Eggleston was 92nd in 17:58.90.
Rounding out the scoring for the Gophers were junior Deborah Hudleston, 135th in 18:13.80, and sophomore Victoria Moses, 188th in 18:36.40.
The 17th-place finish tied the team's 1991 finish. Minnesota was 10th, their best-ever, finish in 1983. Minnesota was making its third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Gophers were 21st in 1997 and 26th in 1998.
