11/3/1999 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball
Minnesota easily won the first two games, scoring 25 of 26 points during the last part of the first game and the second game. The Hawkeyes, behind the strong serving of Julie Williams, took an 11-4 lead in the third game, before the Gophers stormed back to score the final 11 points of the match.
"We were extremely efficient and businesslike in the first two games," said Minnesota coach Mike Hebert. "We lost control for a time in the third game, but I was encouraged to see the comeback. 20 wins is always a nice number to see for any volleyball coach or player."
Nicole Branagh recorded her 1500th career kill during the second game and led Minnesota with 12 kills and 10 digs. The Gophers hit .352 as a team, compared to Iowa's .010 hitting percentage. Minnesota had seven service aces to Iowa's two, and outblocked the Hawkeyes, 8-4.
The Gophers will travel to Northwestern for a match Friday at 7 p.m.
