CARTER, HAMILTON NAMED TO AP ALL-AMERICA TEAM

Tyrone Carter, who last week collected the Jim Thorpe Award given to the nation's best defensive back, and junior center Ben Hamilton were named to the Associated Press first team All-America sqaud Monday. It marked the first time since 1961 that two Golden Gophers were named to the first team All-America squad in the same year (Sandy Stephens, Bobby Bell).

In addition, head coach Glen Mason was named a finalist for the prestigious Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year award by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. The winner will be announced Thursday, Jan. 6 in Houston, Texas. Mason, who was named Big Ten Coach of the Year last month, has already received national coach of the year honors from The Football News.
