HAMILTON, CARTER AND NYSTROM EARN SPORTING NEWS ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Carter, a native of Pompano Beach, Fla., has already earned first-team All-Big Ten honors by both the coaches and the media. He was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award and a finalist for the Thorpe Award to be awarded Thursday in Orlando, Fla. Carter broke the school record and the NCAA Division I-A record among defensive backs with 511 tackles. Carter led the Golden Gophers this season with 127 tackles, including 99 solos. He also led the team in punt returns, setting a new school record in a single- season with 30 returns for 356 yards.
Hamilton is the starting center for the Golden Gophers. The Plymouth, Minn., native has given up only one sack this season as the starting center. He has 66 knockdown blocks to his credit in 10 games played this season. Hamilton was also selected All- Big Ten first-team by the coaches.
New Hope, Minn., native Dan Nystrom broke a single-season school record with 90 points. Nystrom kicked the 32-yard winning field goal to beat No. 2- ranked Penn State 24-23 in University Park, Pa. He also split the uprights from 51 yards out, establishing a new freshman school record.
