44 STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED FOR ACADEMICS

atForty-four University of Minnesota student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fall 1999 season. To earn academic honors, athletes must be a letterwinner in at least the second year at their institution and carry a career grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Sophomore Stephanie Hagen, who earned All-Big Ten and all-district honors, has a 3.57 GPA and is undecided on a major. Senior Heather Swenson has the team's highest grade-point average, 3.75 in marketing. Other volleyball athletes honored are junior Lisa Aschenbrenner, sophomore Ali Berres and sophomore Lindsey Berg.

Cross country junior Corinne Nimtz has the highest GPA of Minnesota's women student-athletes honored. She has a 3.92 average in management and recorded a career-best time at the NCAA Championships in November. Junior Elaine Eggleston, who earned all-region and All-Big Ten honors for the second time this season, has a 3.48 GPA in biology. Other cross country athletes honored are senior Minna Haronoja, sophomore Victoria Moses, sophomore Christine Eid, senior Deborah Hudleston, junior Genalyn Johnson, sophomore Jenny Moylan and senior Hayley Singer.

Ten soccer student-athletes earned academic recognition. First-team all-conference selection Juli Montgomery leads the way with a 3.80 GPA. Second-team All-Big Ten honoree Laurie Seidl earned recognition with a 3.46 GPA in journalism. Senior Noelle Papenhausen has a 3.58 GPA in psychology, while senior Rose Grimm has a 3.48 in animal science. Others honored are sophomore Julie Eibensteiner, junior Erin Holland, senior Erika Kruse, senior Jaime O'Gara, sophomore Alison Rackley and sophomore Sarah FitzGerald.

A total of 20 male student-athletes were named to the all-academic team. Leading the football team is senior Luke Braaten, who has a 3.63 GPA in math education. Braaten has already received a bachelor's degree and is working on a Master's of Education degree. Senior longsnapper Derek Rackley has a 3.31 GPA and senior fullback Brad Priggee has a 3.55 GPA, both in the Master's of Education program. Other football players honored include sophomore wide receiver Ron Johnson, who has a 3.27 GPA in pre-business and leads the team with 36 catches for 520 yards and five touchdowns, and starting offensive guard Derek Burns, who holds a 3.43 GPA in marketing.

Sophomore Andy Kummer led the cross country team with a 3.76 GPA in pre-medicine. Sophomore Joey Corr, who placed 102nd at the NCAA championship, holds a 3.45 GPA in political science. Senior Nate Clay, with a 3.36 GPA, was also honored.
