CARTER WINS THORPE AWARD

afterUniversity of Minnesota senior All-American Tyrone Carter won the Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing the top defensive back in college football, this afternoon at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.
Carter, who earned first-team All-America honors by Sporting News and was first-team All-Big Ten, broke the Division I-A all- time tackle record for a defensive back with 511 tackles in his career. He also broke the school record and is second in the nation all-time with 397 solo tackles.
The other two finalists for the award were New Mexico senior Brian Urlacher and Tennessee junior Deon Grant. The formal presentation of the award will take place Feb. 17, 2000, in Oklahoma City.
