2/1/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

MariucSophomore forward Matt Leimbek has been named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in last weekend's series against Michigan Tech at Mariucci Arena. The Golden Gophers swept the Tigers to move into sixth place in the WCHA standings.

Leimbek, a native of Rochester, Minn., had a hand in three of Minnesota's four goals (one goal, two assists) in Friday's 4-2 win, then scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in Saturday's 4-2 victory. On the weekend, Leimbek scored two goals and supplied three assists. Leimbek, who had no goals and seven assists in his first 43 collegiate games, now has three goals and five assists for eight points in his last five games and has scored goals in three successive games. He leads the team with a +5 rating, including a +3 last weekend, and has scored on three of his last four shots on goal.

Leimbek joins Adam Hauser (Nov. 2) and Aaron Miskovich (Oct. 19) as Golden Gophers who have been named WCHA Players of the Week throughout the 1998-99 season.

The Golden Gophers head to second-place Colorado College for a WCHA showdown this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday's game faces off at 8:35 p.m. Central time, with Saturday's rematch slated for 8:05 p.m.
