MUZERALL'S GOAL LEADS GOPHERS PAST FRIARS

2/20/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

OMinnesota fired 38 shots at Providence goalie Sara DeCosta but Nadine Muzerall's goal at 15:38 of the first period was the only one to get by the 1998 Olympian. However, it was enough to give the Gophers a 1-0 victory.

Muzerall had just come out of the penalty 22 seconds before scoring her 23rd goal of the season and scored as the Friars Val Bono was being whistled for a cross- checking penalty.

With the puck loose in front of the Providence goal, Jenny Schmidgall poked the puck free and Muzerall scored from the left side when DeCosta was unable to follow the puck through the pile of bodies near the crease.

The Gophers had ample opportunities to pull away in the game, outshooting their guests 19-1 in the second period and 30-9 over the final 40 minutes.

Although DeCosta was the star of the game with her 37- save effort, Minnesota goalie Erica Killewald stopped 15 shots for her sixth shutout of the season, including a breakaway effort by Kim Mathias late in the third period.

The second-ranked Gophers, 24-2-2, and sixth-ranked Friars, 17-9-2, close out their two-game series Sunday, beginning at 1:05 p.m., at Mariucci Arena. The game will be broadcast by KKMS-980 AM.
