DEERING SCORES TWICE AS BEARS DOWN GOPHERS

2/26/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

secBrown center Marcie Deering scored both of her team's goals and Ali Brewer stopped 28 of 29 shots as the Bears handed Minnesota a 2-1 loss at Mariucci Arena.

In a physical match-up between the second-ranked Gophers and fourth-ranked Brown, the visitors got on the board first as Tamra Jones split the Minnesota defense with a pass and Deering carried the puck in from the red line before beating Erica Killewald between the legs for her 12th goal of the season at 10:39.

The Gophers got the goal back in the second period while killing a penalty. Kris Scholz got her 16th goal of the season as she rapped home a loose puck at 11:49.

Both teams battled through nearly 35 minutes of scoreless action and appeared headed to overtime until Deering took a pass from Jill Graat, fired a backhand shot over the net and stuffed home the rebound off the glass to give the Bears a 2-1 lead and the win at 16:04 of the final period.

Brown, 18-4-3, outshot Minnesota, 25-3-2, 30-29 and snapped the Gophers' seven-game winning streak. Killewald had 28 saves for Minnesota.

The two teams wrap up their two-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Mariucci Arena.
