GOPHERS SHUTOUT MAVERICKS FOR MIDWEST SHOWDOWN TITLE

Minnesota started slowly but scored twice in the second period and added four more goals in the third period to defeat Minnesota State, Mankato 6-0 in the championship game of the Midwest Showdown at Mariucci Arena.

Despite outshooting the Mavericks 22-1 in the opening period, Minnesota State goalie Jenny Padget kept her team in the game by shutting out the Gophers in the opening 20 minutes.

Ambria Thomas broke up the scoreless tie after Courtney Kennedy carried the puck out of the Minnesota zone, hit Thomas with a pass at the far blue line and she scored her 13th goal of the season at 4:23.

Kennedy then made it 2-0 with 1:49 to play in the second period when she picked up a loose puck in the left corner of her own zone and went end-to-end for her 15th goal of the season.

Winny Brodt then helped the Gophers clinch the game, scoring once in the final period while setting up two other goals as Minnesota raised its record to 26-3-3 on the year. Minnesota State, Mankato finishes its first season of varsity competition at 14-15-0.

Padget recorded 48 saves for the Mavericks while Erica Killewald, who recorded her first career assist on Thomas' goal, posted her seventh shutout of the season with 12 saves.
