The tournament is in its third year but the 1999 Classic marks the first time that the event has a major sponsor, Taylor Made, a national leader in golf equipment. Businesses throughout the Myrtle Beach area will also join forces in making this spring's tournament a huge success.
The Myrtlewood Golf Club will once again provide the challenging, yet beautiful backdrop to this collegiate women's golf event. The 36-hole Classic will be played on a 5,900-yard course with a par of 72.
"We're excited to be part of a growing tournament, it's come a long way in three years," said Keith Stanzel, Director of Marketing and Sales for the golf division of Burroughs and Chapin. "The Classic is a nice commitment for us, it associates us with the leaders of tomorrow."
Currently eight teams, in addition to Coastal Carolina and Minnesota, are expected to compete in this year's Classic: defending champion Northwestern University, University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, University of Michigan and the College of Charleston.
"This tournament has the potential to be one of the finest in the nation," said Minnesota women's golf coach Kathy Williams. "The location, the course, the sponsors, the teams, we're all striving to make this tournament a great one."
