WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS FOURTH AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

GymFreshman Megan Beuckens tied for second on the floor exercise and tied for fifth on the balance beam to lead Minnesota to fourth place at the Big Ten Gymnastics Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan, which had won six consecutive titles before placing second to Minnesota a year ago, recaptured the team title, scoring 196.300 points. Penn State was second at 195.550, with Ohio State third (194.625) and the Golden Gophers fourth (194.150).

Beuckens finished in a five-way tie for second place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.90, earning All-Big Ten honors. Beuckens also earned honors on the balance beam, where she scored a career-high 9.825 to tie for fifth place. Junior Judy Cavazos and freshman Catie Christensen tied for fifth place on the uneven bars with a 9.85, earning All-Big Ten honors.

Minnesota scored 48.825 points on the uneven bars. Sophomore Megan Skokut scored a 9.80, which tied for 14th place, and junior Melissa Chang tied for 19th place with a 9.725.

Senior Cathy Keyser, the defending balance beam champion, performed well during her routine but fell on the dismount, scoring a 9.35. Minnesota also had to count a 9.175 score and recorded 47.80 points on the balance beam.

Minnesota scored 49.15 points on the floor exercise, tying the second-highest score of the season. Beuckens led the way with her second-place finish. Cavazos scored 9.875, which tied for seventh place, and Christensen scored 9.85, good for a tie for 10th place.

The Gophers ended the meet on the vault, scoring 48.375 points. Beuckens led the Gopher scorers with a 9.725, which placed 16th. Selinger scored 9.70 and junior Melissa Chang 9.675.
