WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM WINS BAYOU CLASSIC

poiThe University of Minnesota women's track and field team crowned four champions en route to winning the team title at the Rice Bayou Classic in Houston on Saturday. The Golden Gophers tallied 157 points to outdistance second-place Illinois' total of 120.

Nicole Chimko's performance in the javelin highlighted the meet. Chimko, a returning All-American in the event, placed first with a Classic record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 180 feet, 2 inches. The throw betters her career high by over three feet. She also placed third in the discus with a throw of 155-4.

Aubrey Schmitt provisionally qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships in winning the shot put with a toss of 49-5 3/4. Schmitt added a second-place finish in the discus with an effort of 160-9 and a third-place finish in the hammer with a mark of 162-11.

Beth Howard contributed the Gophers' third title in the throwing events, winning the hammer with a distance of 176-1.

Winning the Gophers only title on the track was Corinne Nimtz, who won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 58.30 seconds.
