GOLDEN GOPHERS CAPTURE DR. PEPPER INTERCOLLEGIATE TITLE

Junior Martin LeMesurier led the way for the Golden Gophers in the final round, carding a five-under par 67 to finish alone in third place individually with a 54- hole total of three-under par 213. Northwestern's Luke Donald shot a final round 66, the low round of the tournament, to edge defending NCAA Champion James McLean of Minnesota by one stroke for individual honors. McLean's three-round total of six-under par 210 was capped by a one-under par 71 on the tournament's final day.
Senior Adam Dooley from Albany, Minn., ranked 34th in the nation individually, continued his steady play with a two-under par 70 on Sunday to finish in a tie for sixth individually with an even par score of 216. Senior Jeff Barney of Appleton, Minn., and senior Andy Komor of New Brighton, Minn., each fired even par scores of 72 on Sunday.
The Golden Gophers bested Northwestern by five shots for the team title. Illinois finished a distant third, 24 shots behind Minnesota. A total of 10 of the Big Ten's 11 teams participated in the event. Minnesota will host the 1999 Big Ten Championships at Les Bolstad Golf Course from May 14-16.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend by traveling to the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Golf Championships in World Golf Village, Florida, an event that will be telecast on ESPN.
