Minnesota jumped to a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly from Robb Quinlan in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. Sophomore Rick Brosseau singled and scored on a wild pitch while redshirt freshman Jason Kennedy added a RBI single that scored Scott Howard.
Wichita State rebounded off of Golden Gopher starter Chadd Clarey with two runs in the third inning and a tying run in the fifth. Clarey pitched four-plus innings for Minnesota and struck out a career-high tying six batters. He allowed three runs on three hits and five walks.
After Clarey walked the first two Shockers in the fifth, Wagner gave up a RBI single to Jeff Ryan. Clean- up hitter Pat Magness then walked to load the bases with no one out and the game tied. Wagner struck out Koyie Hill for the first out. Eric Absher then flied out to rightfielder Jason Kennedy who gunned down Blake Blasi who was attempting to score from third to end the inning.
Minnesota responded in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good with a pair of RBI doubles from Arlt and Quinlan. Wichita State starter Erich Bryan (2-2) was the loser for the Shockers as he gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings.
Despite the loss, Wichita State captured the Hormel Foods Baseball Classic title with a 2-1 record. Minnesota ended a three-game home losing streak and finished the tournament with a mark of 1-2.
