#6 MICHIGAN COMPLETES SOFTBALL SWEEP OF #22 MINNESOTA

The sixth-ranked Michigan softball team defeated #22 Minnesota 6-3 in the final game of a three-game series at Alumni Field. Michigan extends its unbeaten streak to 31 games and is 35-5-1, 8-0 in the Big Ten. Minnesota falls to 28-13, 2-4 in the Big Ten.

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Michelle Bennett singled in Steph Midthun. Michigan scored two runs n their half of the first and never trailed from that point. Minnesota scored a fourth-inning run on a bases-loaded walk by Jordanne Nygren and a run in the sixth inning on a double by Nygren, but could never get even. Minnesota left 14 runners on base in the game. Steph Klaviter pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and took the loss, falling to 10-6.

Minnesota will continue its 1999 season Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Iowa State beginning at 3 p.m.
