SOFTBALL SWEEPS TWO FROM PENN STATE

tNo. 25 Minnesota swept a doubleheader from Penn State on Saturday by game scores of 1-0 and 6-3. Minnesota improves to 30-13 on the season and 4-4 in the Big Ten.

In the opener, Minnesota won in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dana Ballard singled with the bases loaded and two outs, scoring Shannon Beeler with the game's only run. Steph Klaviter threw a two-hit shutout with one walk and two strikeouts on only 71 pitches for the complete-game victory.

In the nightcap, Minnesota scored three runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to the 6-3 victory. Steph Midthun tied a school record with four hits in the game. Tammi Hays, Jordanne Nygren and Angel Braden all had two hits in the game. Heather Brown pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and improved to 10-1. Michelle Harrison picked up her third save of the year.

Minnesota went the entire doubleheader without committing an error.

The Gophers will finish the series with Penn State on Sunday in a single game beginning at noon.
