WOMEN'S GOLF SECOND AFTER FIRST ROUND OF HAWKEYE INVITATIONAL

tiedThe University of Minnesota women's golf team is in second place after the first round of the Hawkeye Invitational played Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Golden Gophers, behind three players tied for sixth place, tallied 318 strokes, trailing leader Indiana's total of 307. Northwestern is third at 327.

Seniors Melanie Lepp, Michelle Ballou and Donna Boom all shot a 6-over par 79 to pace the Gophers. Indiana's Erin Carney leads the field with a 1-under par 72 after the first round.

A fourth Minnesota senior, Kristi Weichert, is in 17th place with an 81 after 18 holes. Other Gophers competing are Jenny Bruun, who is tied for 28th at 85, and Megan Stier,, who is tied for 41st at 88.

The Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
