GULBRANDSEN GRABS TRIPLE JUMP TITLE AT DRAKE RELAYS

dChristine Gulbrandsen set a school record and placed first in the triple jump, leading a group of five Minnesota athletes whom placed in event finals during the first day of the 90th annual Drake Relays.

Gulbrandsen's leap of 41 feet, 8 3/4 inches was nine inches better than the record Lori Hardrick set in 1996 and surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.< p> The Gophers' throwers fared well as Linda Lindqvist, competing for the first time at Minnesota, and Nicole Chimko finished second and third in the javelin.

Lindqvist placed second second provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships with a throw of 159-6 while Chimko, who has already met automatic qualifying standards in the event, placed third with a throw of 152-10.

Corinne Nimtz also garnered a second-place finish as she clocked in a 34 minutes, 32.14 seconds in the 10,000-meter run, less than four seconds out of first place.

Minna Haronoja placed ninth in the 3,000-meter run, turning in a time of 10:05.71.
