GOPHER SOFTBALL DEFEATS INDIANA, MAINTAINS SECOND PLACE IN BIG TEN

iThe Minnesota softball team completed a three-game sweep of Indiana with a 10-0, five-inning victory at the Bierman Softball Complex. Minnesota maintains its second-place standing in the Big Ten and improved to 36-15, 9-5 in conference play. Indiana fell to 17-32, 3-13 in Big Ten play.

The Gophers opened the scoring in the second inning on a two-run single by Morgan Holden. Minnesota added four runs in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Angel Braden, a run-scoring triple by Michelle Bennett and a two-run home run by Erin Brophy. The Gophers concluded the scoring with four fourth-inning runs, keyed by a two-run single by Dana Ballard and a two-run home run by Shannon Beeler. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings due to the eight-run rule.

Braden had three hits for Minnesota to lead a 10-hit attack. Brophy's home run was her sixth of the season and her third in three games. Beeler's home run was the 10th of the season and the 40th of her career. Beeler had two RBI to increase her career total to 229 runs batted in to move into fifth place on the NCAA's all-time list. Steph Klaviter pitched her eighth shutout of the season and the 20th of her career, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. Klaviter improved to 16-7, 7-2 in Big Ten play.

The Gophers, winners of five straight and eight of her last nine games, play a doubleheader at Northwestern on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
