GOPHERS SIGN ANTHONY AND SAMARGIA TO HOCKEY TENDERS

Nick Anthony is a 5'10", 175-pound center from Shattuck St. Mary's High School in Faribault, Minn. Anthony finished the 1998-99 season with 16 goals and 39 assists playing for the Twin Cities Vulcans of the United States Hockey League. He finished in a tie for 10th place in the league scoring chase with a total of 55 points on the season. Anthony was also a member of the U.S. Junior Select Team which won the Freedom Cup Challenge and was also a participant in the USHL All- Star Game.
Pete Samargia, a 6'3", 175-pound goaltender from Eveleth, Minn., played in 42 games last season for the Twin Cities Vulcans of the USHL. Samargia posted a 16- 25-0 record, 3.98 goals-against average, and .880 saves percentage during the 1998-99 campaign. He led Eveleth High School to the 1998 Minnesota State Class `A' Championship.
"We expect both Nick and Pete to fill immediate needs within our program," said Golden Gopher Associate Head Coach Mike Guentzel. "They have gained valuable experience playing in the USHL and will provide us the experience and depth we need to compete in the WCHA. Nick was an offensive leader for the Vulcans for two years and Pete won the goaltender job early in the year and played the majority of the games last season for the Vulcans."
