JAMES MCLEAN NAMED BIG TEN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

ChampionshDefending NCAA Champion James McLean has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for his efforts in last weekend's Compaq U.S. Collegiate Golf Championships. McLean finished tied for third individually in the tournament featuring one of the top regular-season fields in collegiate golf. The Golden Gophers finished second as a team in the 13-team event.

McLean, a sophomore from Wahgunyah, Victoria, Australia has a scoring average of 70.5 in 20 rounds of play this season. He posted his sixth top ten finish in seven tournaments finished this season, and ranks among the top golfers in the nation in scoring average in the 1998-99 season. The team finish and McLean's individual efforts were captured last weekend by an ESPN national television audience. McLean will have a chance to defend his NCAA individual title from June 2-5 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

The Golden Gophers travel to Cary, N.C., this weekend for the Bellsouth Yellow Pages Intercollegiate.
