17 MALE ATHLETES EARN WINTER ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN HONORS

gThe University of Minnesota men's athletics department had 17 male student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors on the Winter Academic All-Conference Teams. Seven swimmers, five wrestlers, four gymnasts and one basketball player make up the list of male athletes that are in at least their second year of competition and have earned a 3.0 GPA or better.

Topping the list is senior All-American swimmer John Cahoy of Hudson, Wis. Cahoy has compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA in all quarters of his college career while double majoring in chemistry and biochemistry. He was a 1998 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American and a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Distrtict All-America selection. He was also a member of four Big Ten Championship relay teams at the 1999 Big Ten Championships.

Senior swimmer Martin Zielinski earned his third Academic All-Big Ten honor. Zielinski boasts a 3.67 GPA in Biology and Pre-Medicine and was the 1999 Big Ten 100 butterfly champion. Other honorees from swimming include 1999 All-Big Ten selections senior Luis Lopez, who holds a 3.45 GPA in mechanical engineering, senior Jono McLeod, who holds a 3.56 GPA in psychology and biology and junior Yoav Meiri, who has a 3.49 GPA in design communication. Junior Brian Howard, who holds a 3.23 GPA in journalism and senior Jeff Miller, who boasts a 3.78 GPA in aerospace engineering and mechanics.

Topping the notable mentions in wrestling is Big Ten Wrestler of the Year senior Tim Hartung. Hartung boasts a 3.24 GPA in kinesiology. He earned his third Big Ten title this season and his second NCAA title. Senior Chad Kraft, who became Minnesota1s first four-time All-American, boasts a 3.01 GPA in kinesiology. Junior Brandon Eggum, who was the 1999 Big Ten Champion at 184 pounds, holds a 3.00 GPA in applied economics. Other wrestlers include sophomore Owen Elzen, who has a 3.14 GPA in kinesiology and junior Ken Howard holds a 3.06 GPA in design communication.

Four members of the Golden Gopher gymnastics team were honored. Senior Jason Krob, who was a 1999 Big Ten finalist on the pommel horse, holds a 3.57 GPA in finance. Junior Chad Connor leads the team with a 3.86 GPA in finance and junior Matt Kieffer holds a 3.76 GPA in finance. Sophomore Allen Sopko was also honored, he holds a 3.05 GPA in architecture.

Sophomore guard Kevin Nathaniel of Camarillo, Calif., was the lone basketball player honored. Nathaniel holds a 3.19 GPA in criminial justice. He started most of the season at the guard position and averaged 4.0 ppg and 3.1 rpg.
