GOPHER SOFTBALL SPLITS AT MICHIGAN STATE, MAINTAINS SECOND PLACE

In the opener, Gopher pitcher Steph Klaviter hurled her sixth career one-hitter, allowing a second-inning single to Spartan shortstop Stacey Phillips. Minnesota shortstop Shannon Beeler hit her 11th home run of the season in the first inning to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead. Beeler drove in a run with a single in the sixth inning to increase the Gopher advantage to 2-0, and Meghan Smith's infield single in the final inning scored the Gophers' final run.
Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap when Steph Midthun scored on a wild pitch. Michigan State took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but the Gophers tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a Beeler single. Michigan State scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning of a sacrifice fly by Margaret Hollis. Minnesota left runners on in six of the seven innings and left a total of nine runners on for the game.
The two teams will play a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
