GOPHERS GEAR UP FOR BIG TENS WITH WOLVERINE TITLE
5/10/1999 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
Defending NCAA Champion James McLean took home his first individual championship of the season by carding an 11-under par total of 202. Teammate Martin LeMesurier, who fired Minnesota's low round of 67 on Sunday, tied with Jess Daley of the Wildcats for second place at two-under par 211. Senior captain Adam Dooley of Albany, Minn., was among a trio of golfers tied for fourth overall with an even-par total of 213.< P> The team win marks the fourth tournament win and eighth top five finish for the Maroon and Gold in 10 starts this season. In its last four events, Minnesota has two first-place finishes, a runner-up showing, and a third- place finish.
McLean is involved in quite an individual battle with Northwestern's Luke Donald for the Les Bolstad Award, given to the golfer with the lowest individual stroke average in the Big Ten. Through Sunday's final round, Donald unofficially leads McLean by less than two- tenths of a stroke heading into this weekend's Big Ten Championships at Les Bolstad/University of Minnesota Golf Course. McLean won the Bolstad Award last season as a freshman. The 63 carded by McLean in Saturday's second round in Ann Arbor was the lowest score posted by a Big Ten golfer this season.
The Big Ten Championships get underway with 36 holes of play on Friday, with the Golden Gophers teeing off at 8:40 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. The event concludes with 18 holes each on Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Gophers will be vying for their first conference men's golf title since 1972.
